That's entirely a CSS question. I am no expert on CSS animations, but animating over the position attribute is hard to imagine given that the values this can assume are "not of the same type." But I am more than certain that whatever you are trying to do can be accomplished via animating actual positions (left, top, etc.) or using translations.

And when you are ready to apply animations, next to using CSS only, you can also look at the UI.Next Animation API.
